Ileana Vulpescu - The Art of Compromising

Ileana Vulpescu’s literature is like a glass of water that is offered before one realizes one is thirsty. One enjoys it and only when the water reaches one’s mouth does one realize how much one needed that water.

Every one of the books written by this great writer is an invitation to retrospection, to opening ears and minds.

The most beautiful phrase from reading this book (The Art of Compromising) is:

Do not share all that you know, do not believe everything you hear, do not do all that you can do!

Office personas – the colleague obsessed with cleaning

It is not easy to work with people. Have you ever thought about making a classification of the various types of colleagues and managers that you have encountered so far?!

Talking with my friends about our work experiences, I managed to define a couple of office personas. Here below you will find the one about the colleague obsessed with cleaning.

How many of you have already worked with such a typology?

The Case of the Colleague Obsessed with Cleaning

We all must have at least once in our lives met somebody obsessed with cleaning. At work, the things are rather difficult to handle if one preferes to have everything shining. At the most, one can control the cleanlinless of one’s office desk. Of course, the people working in the HR department will put flyers in kitchens and halls to remind workers of the respect they must show to the others regarding cleanliness and thus keeping the health and friendly atmosphere into the office building.

I happen to witness the most intense discussions while in the kitchen. Rebukes follwed by swearing were the highlight of the dicussion. And nothing could derail the participants in such reproving, not even other colleagues that gently entered the kitchen with their department dish sponge who would clean the dishes, dry them and leave as fast as they can without interrupting the blasting at full volume of the fight on some people’s uncleanliness.

I was very amused to hear about the story of the cleaning lady that would wipe with the same cloth all desks of a building in which 300 people worked. The cloth had an indentifiable color, but the smell was easy to define – it made one sick. The person telling me about this did not dare to tell the cleaning lady that he does not like the smell of his desk after she wipes the desk with the cloth or the fact that his sleeves would cary the stench for nearly an entire day. But he did ask her nicely not to clean his desk anymore, mentioning that he is rather obsessed with cleaning and he would rather do it himself. The cleaning lady gently smiled at him and nodded. But, from time to time, in the morning, a sour smell would greet him at his desk, which is to mean that even those obsessed with cleaning need support from time to time.

Alina was recently hired as a secretary in a consultancy firm. She knew even from the start that she must be careful about how she acts, but she had never before met such evil and selfish specimens. Even though she was often explained that consultants work very hard, she could not fathom why the were so mean. Work could not be held responsible for that. She had met other people that worked harder, physically; such as, the gentleman that told her he worked during a summer for a roadways&bridges company and at the end of it people would not recognize him being so sunburnt. People like him did not become meaner due to the hard working conditions. The consultants had no excuse.

Alina knew that she must pay attention to how she answers the phone and to always cater to the consultants’ needs. Her manager, Leo, had explained to her that from all of her tasks this was the most important one, and that the consultants needed to be kept happy. So Alina made efforts in order to make sure they were, taking their lunch orders, bringing them food and their change, and making sure they had everything they needed in order to do their jobs.

The most difficult, by far, was Violeta. She had liked her in the beginning. She was beautiful, very beautiful actually. But after having known her, Alina understood that even witches can be beautiful. Clara, the girl that used to occupy the positon before her, had given Alina a tip – 'Violeta likes things to be very clean! Make sure that her garbage bin is always empty and never throw something in it by mistake. I once did that and I was very sorry'.

Ever since, Alina would be extra careful around Violeta’s desk. It was true, Violeta’s desk was actually very clean and nothing more could be found on it then the desk light and a ballpoint pen. However, Alina was puzzled about how Violeta liked to keep things clean, but had no problem in brushing her hair in the middle of the open space, with everyone around, leaving her hair to fall on the carpet?!

The first time that Alina noticed Violeta doing this, she had the impression that she was watching a sleepwalker. Violeta was standing a couple of steps from her desk (probably not to drop some hairs on her desk) and was brushing her hair in slow motion. Alina concluded that people are weird and contradictory, and minded her own business, answering the landline.

Leo: Alina, is that you?

Alina: Yes.

Leo: It’s Leo. I urgently need my notes.

Alina feared that this would turn into another complicated situation. Had he forgotten his notes in the hotel room again? Last time, it was easy to get them back, even after Leo checked out. She had rang the hotel in Amsterdam and people were nice enough to send them. Together with the laptop that Leo had also forgotten on the windowsill of the hotel room. Leo was a wonder! But she no longer asked herself questions about him. Not ever since she found out that he had no clue about the difference between a.m and p.m. . How did he manage to get on planes on time she did not question anymore! She had promised herlself that, to no longer ask why.

Alina: Sure, Leo. Do you know were they are? At the hotel?

Leo: No. I need other notes. They are on my desk, could you please go in there and read them to me? They are on the last page.

Alina: OK, wait for me, please.

Alina put down the receiver and went to her manager’s office. She took the agenda from his desk and while she was coming out of the office, with the tail of her eye she noticed Violeta standing from her desk. Alina arrived at the reception desk, she took the receiver and asked Leo where exactly she could start reading from.

Violeta was coming slowly towards the reception desk. Like a snake that takes its own time crawling towards the victim, convinced of the fact that it can paralyze it only by the slow motion that is so hard to bear. Yet, Alina continued reading.

Leo: Ah, so I was remembering it correctly! Hang on a little to make a note. Could you please repeat the last two sentences?

Alina: At seven o’clock...

Alina is startled by some white thing moving about very fast over her head. She stops reading, she raises her head and sees Violeta resting on one of her arms on the reception desk and with the other arm flaunting an empty box of desk tissues. Alina knits her brows and gently moves her head, asking Violeta without uttering a word about what she wants. As a response, Violeta keeps flaunting the empty box more closer to Alina’s face, indicating with an arm that she wants Alina to take it and throw it in Alina’s garbage bin.

Alina knits her brows and indicates one more time to Violeta that she is speaking on the phone, hoping that this way she will leave her in peace. Violeta slams down, less noisy than she would have hoped, the empty box of desk tissues. She then turns on her heels, raises her chin, flaunting her red, straight hair, snorts and directs herself proudly to her desk. Another consultant's mission achieved!

A short while after this incident, Alina resigned, as she did not find understanding from Leo after telling him the story of the empty box. Some things cannot be forced, but when one notices that one has nobody one one’s side, it’s better to leave for other horizons.

10 Reasons Why I Love Vlad Musatescu’ Literature

Today marks one hundred years since Vlad Musatescu was born. I prepared a ten-reasons list why I love Vlad and his books and what reading them has taught me. Here they are:

1. It is important to be cheerful and to laugh at yourself and the situations you face.

2. By applying all of the above, one remains a reliable, hardworking and responsible person. To laugh, contrary to what some mimicking great intelligence believe, does not make one an idiot.

3. Because nobody ever described so majestically the recipe of the big tomato salad.

4. Sometimes it so happens that in the abovementioned salad one adds car oil instead of salad oil. Then, one gathers oneself and refers to the first reason in this list.

5. So much love for the kind people is felt throughout his books, and the way Vlad highlights their humanity reminds me of the kind people I too met until now and it makes me look forward to meeting others. And this is how I exercise gratefulness.

6. Vlad Musatescu’s collection called ‘Approximate Adventures’ mentions more Romanian writers than ‘The History of the Romanian Literature’ written by George Calinescu.

7. In the beginning, Vlad wanted to be a poet. I cannot but resonate with him on that.

8. Vlad always found himself in the middle of weird and funny happenings. Whether it was him that initiated them or not.

9. Without the dog Mishu Falconetti, his nephews that he called the Ostrogoths, the character Mike-The Saint and aunt Ralitza, something inside of me, beautiful that is, would have never developed.

10. And mostly, I am grateful and happy to have discovered Vlad’s books because all my love for books and reading started with them.

And since no matter how convincing I write about Vlad, it’s far better for you to experience first-hand reading, please see below some paragraphs selected from his works and published on my blog throughout the years:

Do You Know How To Properly Reply To A Question?!

More often than not, I’ve been noticing that we are losing basic skills regarding the interaction with humans. For example, we can no longer properly reply to a question.

I dare you to make a small analysis around you. Take a look at your friends, families, colleagues, managers or simply people on TV, how often do they reply to what was actually asked in the question?

To my mind, you’ll be surprised with the result. Fewer and fewer people seem to understand and cultivate the need for clarity, but also the respect towards the time of the interlocutor.

I know, of course, that not answering directly to a question is a strategy, especially applied in politics, but also in other domains where one is not allowed to give certain information and one must embellish keywords with platitudes.

It seems to me that we have assimilated instead all the things that we laughed about in an old video about a person not being able to ask a question, and we no longer can simply reply to a question. We just beat around the bush until or if somebody stops us.

My suggestions?

Firstly, to listen. To not fill in the blanks ourselves with the things we believe the interlocutor wants to ask us, and to stop and concentrate on their words.

Secondly, to realise that by answering directly to someone we actually show them respect, and we also value their time and ours.

Thirdly, if we do not know the answer to a question, we should admit as much. It’s hard, I know, to admit that one doesnot know. But nothing conveys the message that one is a responsible person than this, showing respect to the interlocutor and also not given them untrue information.

Nobody deserves to be disinformed just to make it easier on ourselves to not admit not knowing or because we mistakenly fear that admitting one does not know something is a weakness.

Let's Reduce Notifications!

Like any working person, I have always had on my computer various applications and programs. Some are useful and support one in the delivery of projects. Others, are just mere occupants of the computer’s memory, but they have to be kept.

I do not know if you have noticed, but the modern human being is assisted more and more. All things surrounding are smart, but not the human being. As a simple example, I only know by heart my telephone number. We exercise our memory less and less, ignoring the damage that this may lead to. It’s enough to experience once your telephone running out of battery and you will know what I mean.

To work is stressful. It does not matter how many breaks one takes, if one works from home or from the office, if one travels for work or not, if one practices mindfulness or not, those that work will experience stress (sometimes, a lot of stress).

I had worked for a lot of time trying to make my way through notifications of various applications, until one day when I realized how much damaged they caused (especially to my focus). I was under a lot of stress when the Outlook notification that I had received an email popped up to the bottom right part of the screen. Moreover, I could see the name of the sender and a part of the message. Since, in this case, the sender was directly responsible for my stress, my blood pressure went through the roof. After a couple of hours, when I came to my senses, I realized I had to do something about this. The sender could not be stopped, but I could manage the situation in a different manner. So I killed this Outlook notification, and I only keept the notification that shows the yellow envelope on the Outlook icon notifying that a new email was received. Ever since, whenever I change jobs, I am sure to take care of this during my first days.

The same thing happens with Teams, too. The icon of the application not only changes color and shows the number of messages that one receives, but it also makes a sound. When one is part of a small team that does not send too many messages, this is manageable. But when one has, aside from the teams’ chat, other individual chats and channels, one must do something. I, for example, have cancelled all sound notifications from this app and kept only the visual one.

A lot of people do not understand or even try to realize the damage that notifications can bring to somebody’s focus. Fortunately, I do not own a smartphone and I am not also bothered by notifications coming from it, but I can truly understand why some people exposed to so many notifications from different devices start to experience burn out.

I strongly recommend you kill as many notifications as possible. Paraphrasing here the comedian Aziz Ansari, you will get your mind back and will be able to see through the fog.

I, the Spiritual One

Some people can’t possibly refrain from using quotes.

When one does not have anything to say, one starts with a quote. It does not matter to whom it belongs to or if it fits the context. What is indeed important is that people have thus the chance to understand that one is a fine intelectual, pondering on serious matters of the world.

The other day, I had such a great laugh because of an add to a shoe company. The text started with a Buddha quote, trying to connect it to certain pair of shoes.

Aside from its improperness, one could not but see that associating the shoes with Buddhism is weird, considering the simplicity it promotes, but also the fact that Buddhist monks usually are barefoot.

Ave, spirituality!
